A 4, 6, 8, or 10 thrown as a double is called a “hard number,” because it’s rolled the hard way. So of the three ways to make a 4 or 10, two are soft and only one is hard. A hard way bet wins if the roll is a chosen pair (4, 6, 8, or 10) and loses if it is a seven or a non-pair with the chosen value.
